DESIGNING FORESTS TO PROVIDE MULTIPLE SERVICES A Short Course is to be held at the Department of Forest and Wood Science, University of Stellenbosch (17-21 November, 2008) on the topic of "Designing Forests to Provide Multiple Services". The course is aimed at senior students of forestry, geography, agriculture, ecology and related disciplines. Management staff with some experience in quantitative methods are welcome. For further information contact Pierre Ackerman at (tel) +27 (21)8083293 or at packer@sun.ac.za FOREST PLANTING CAUGHT IN FOOD PRICE SPIRAL The latest edition of the Southern Hemisphere Forest Industry Journal is out and the focus is on how high world food prices are putting pressure on land available for new forest planting. Rising rural land values, due to the demand for dairy products in particular, has seen rural land values rise substantially in many countries where forestry and farming have often competed for the resource. Also, we feature forestry’s role in mitigating tsunami impacts. For more information on the Journal, contact Mike Smith at mike.smith@southem.com or telephone 64-7-3494107. Announcing her party’s support, Green Party Co-Leader Jeanette Fitzsimons said in a statement that the caucus had decided that substantial changes to the ETS the party had won justified voting for it. Revenue from the ETS would be recycled into a billion dollar fund to make New Zealand homes warm, dry and cost-effective to heat. **************************************** KYOTO FORESTERS URGE GREENS TO SUPPORT SCHEME Earlier, the Kyoto Forestry Association has called for the Green Party to back the legislation so the thousands of New Zealanders who invested their own savings to plant trees in the 1990s can secure the estimated NZ$1.6 billion of carbon credits promised to them by all parties in Parliament. KFA spokesman Roger Dickie said in a statement that the KFA agreed with the Greens that there were serious flaws in the Bill but that the provisions for post-1989 forestry would provide new confidence and investment to plant new forests. **************************************** CARBON MARKETS SET TO DOUBLE DESPITE UNCERTAINTY Meanwhile, it’s reported that concerns over the makeup of the climate agreement to succeed the Kyoto Protocol - and the likelihood of a worsening worldwide credit crunch - is slowing the development of carbon funds to offset greenhouse gas emissions. But despite the uncertainty the global carbon markets are poised to double in value again to more than $100 billion in 2008, market observers told Daily Planet Media. **************************************** FORESTRY HERBICIDES The Monsanto group has hosted the recent annual meeting of GTDHS (the Technical Development Group of Herbicides in Forestry), in Barra Bonita – SP, SBS reported. SBS was represented by its president, Carlos Alberto of Fonseca Funcia, who discussed the subject “Brazil: Forests, Environments and Bioenergia”. The event attracted the presence of 100 representatives from Brazilian forest companies. **************************************** ENCE FACES SANCTIONS FOR CUTTING DOWN NATIVE FOREST Spanish company ENCE has admitted cutting down an area of native forest in Uruguay, where it is building a pulp plant. The government’s agriculture, fishing and forestry agency, MGAP, has accepted the explanation that the damage was caused by accident, Diario El País (Uruguay) reported, but a spokesman has said that sanctions must still apply to the company. **************************************** CAUTION URGED OVER BLACK HOUSING STATS Caution has been urged over figures in South Africa showing that residential property statistics indicate that black ownership has increased by 63.4 percent in the past 10 years. According to Business Report, the country's only black-owned national real estate company has warned that the figures might be giving the wrong impression because many of the deals were formalisations of township leases and activity in rural poor areas. **************************************** IMPORTANT FOREST AGREEMENT FOR GIPPSLAND SIGNED The government in the Australian state of Victoria has signed what is described as a landmark agreement with HVP Plantations (HVP), permanently protecting more than 20,000 hectares of native forest in Gippsland’s Strzelecki Ranges. Environment and Climate Change Minister Gavin Jennings and HVP’s CEO Linda Sewell announced that under the agreement, native forests across HVP’s entire estate in Gippsland’s Strzelecki Ranges would be protected. **************************************** POSITIVE THOUGHTS FOR WEYERHAEUSER The US group, Weyerhaeuser Co., which has recently increased its interests in Latin America while drawing back from Australasia, has drawn positive comments from CNBC's Jim Cramer on his Mad Money Lightning Round. The company’s shares have fallen in recent times due to its reliance the US housing market but hedge fund manager turned television superstar Cramer believes the stock and housing market are near a bottom and lumber will be among the first things to rebound **************************************** MANAGERS WANT SECURITY AGAINST MAPUCHE ATTACKS The managers of companies in Chile’s Araucanía region have urgently called on the government to take responsibility for guaranteeing security following an escalation in attacks by indigenous Mapuche groups on rural properties. Diario El Mercurio reported the business leaders demanded a recovery of security and public order in the zone and an end to the "impunity" of what they called the "terrorist groups". **************************************** RAYONIER PLANS NZ FOREST SALE The US company Rayonier has announced plans to sell the 140,000 hectares of New Zealand plantation forest assets it manages. Paul Nicholls, Managing Director of Rayonier New Zealand Ltd forest managers for the forest business, Matariki, said in a statement that if the investigations proceed to a sale it is intended to sell the business as a going concern. **************************************** AUSTRALIAN COMPANY SIGNS LUSH SANDALWOOD DEAL Perth, Australia-based Indian sandalwood grower, TFS Corporation Ltd, has signed a five-year deal with the United Kingdom-based handmade cosmetics company, Lush, to supply oil produced from TFS plantations, Non-Wood News has reported. Lush has agreed to create a new sandalwood-based product range using TFS oil for marketing throughout their worldwide retail network of 500 stores in 44 countries. **************************************** CONSERVATION ON AGENDA FOR PNG, INDONESIA TALKS Australia’s Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Tony Burke recently visited Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. During the visit, Mr Burke met his counterpart ministers and key business representatives in both countries. Key issues for discussion included joint efforts to stop illegal fishing, to enhance forestry and fisheries conservation and expand agriculture market access. **************************************** FUNDING OPENS FOR MORE CARBON FOOTPRINTING STUDIES New Zealand’s Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is accepting applications for its second round of funding allocations aimed to develop greenhouse gas (GHG) footprinting capabilities in the land-based primary sectors, MAF Policy News reported. The report said NZ$500,000 will be allocated to allow primary industries to further develop expertise in measuring and managing GHG emissions across supply chains. The first round of funding is already having significant paybacks for those sectors involved in the wine, kiwifruit, forestry, dairy and lamb sectors. **************************************** SOUTHERN AFRICAN FREE TRADE DEAL LAUNCHED A free trade area (FTA) is being launched in the Southern Africa region. The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has announced the FTA was launched during a recent summit, under the theme: “SADC Free Trade Area for Growth, Development and Wealth Creation”. A statement said the launching of the SADC FTA marked a major milestone in the implementation of the Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP). **************************************** FEARS DIESEL SHORTAGE COULD DEVASTATE FOREST SECTOR The shortage of diesel is beginning to place Bolivia’s forest productive sector in a critical situation, CFB Press reported. Forestry Chamber president Pablo Antelo recently met with government leaders in the main forestry region of Pando to request some assistance with the difficulties being faced with the lack of fuel available, saying it could cause irreversible damage to the sector. **************************************** FILIPINO FOREST HOPES AND REGRETS The Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific of the UN FAO has launched a stunning new book entitled Forest Faces – Hopes and Regrets in Philippine Forestry. The personal profiles and photographs in the 242-page book not only highlight the link between the Filipino people and their forests but it also underlines the regret over what has been lost in a sometimes surprisingly open and frank way. For more information, contact Patrick Durst, Senior Forestry Officer, FAO Regional Office. Patrick.Durst@fao.org **************************************** NEW BRISBANE BASED CSIRO RESEARCH HUB Research into climate change, water management and managing Australia's unique ecosystems are some of the world leading CSIRO science to be conducted at a new Ecosciences Precinct in Brisbane, Australia, due for completion in 2011. CSIRO Environment Group Executive Dr Andrew Johnson said in a statement that CSIRO’s co-location with Queensland Government agencies and other organisations at the Ecosciences Precinct represented a significant boost to the future of Australian science. **************************************** BRAZIL TO USE CARBON MARKET TO BOOST FOREST RECOVERY Brazil is looking at a project to stimulate the recovery of large areas of its Mata Atlântica region through providing landowners with access to carbon markets. The move is being proposed by the Ministry of the Environment’s Secretariat of Biodiversity and Forests (SBF). The proposal was announced at a workshop promoted by the SBF in conjunction with other MMA departments, SBS reported. A further meeting will be held in September. **************************************** ‘HITMAN’ INNOVATOR RECOGNISED The New Zealand innovator behind technology creating sonic ways through the global sawmilling and veneering manufacturing industry has received special recognition. Peter Carter, who was the innovator behind the Hitman technology, has been recognised at the Bayer Innovator Awards. Carter, chief executive of Fibre-gen, was named finalist in the manufacturing category for developing automated tools that use sonic technology to measure wood stiffness and improve the efficiency of wood processing, a press release said. **************************************** BELL WANTS IN ON REVISED DEVELOPMENT PLAN South African earthmoving equipment manufacturer Bell Equipment has said that it was in ongoing discussions with South Africa’s Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) concerning the company’s participation in the revised Motor Industry Development Programme (MIDP), Engineering News reported. “We are doing all the things the MIDP was designed for - we are exporting, we are creating a lot of employment, we are designing and we are adding value locally,” it was reported Bell Equipment CEO Gary Bell said at the company’s interim results presentation in Johannesburg. **************************************** NEW VENTURE TARGETS FINE STATIONERY MARKET A Chilean company has been established specifically to market fine stationery products. Papelaria was established by its founders after they took many trips to different locations and searched the web over the past year, Diario Financiero has reported. **************************************** ‘FITTER, HEALTHIER’ LOG TRUCKERS ON THE WAY New Zealand’s logging transport industry is to start trialling a programme to help its drivers become fitter and healthier, the Accident Compensation Commission and Transport Engineering Research New Zealand said in a statement. The move comes after an informal survey of 400 logging truck drivers conducted earlier this year showed that 40 - or 10 per cent - had experienced heart-attacks, heart surgery, a stroke, or had died as a result of cardiovascular disease. Two of these drivers had even died while on the job. **************************************** ARTICLES OF INTEREST DECOMPOSITION IN SOUTHERN CHILE FOREST G. Guzmana, W. Quilhota and D. J. Gallowaya.
